    Description

White Star Line: As salvaged from the wreck of the REPUBLIC, most of a crystal carafe with the White Star burgee etched on front.
The carafe is 9" tall. Approximately one-third of the carafe is broken off and missing, apparently still at the bottom of the Atlantic. Miraculously, the logo is centered on the unbroken part so you can display it will ease.
Those of you up on your ship history know this story well. On 22 January 1909 the REPUBLIC was proceeding slowly through thick fog off Nantucket when she was broadsided by Lloyd Italiano's FLORIDA just aft of midships. With the engine room flooding fast, the ship fired up its new-fangled gadget - a wireless set - and sent off the very first distress signal. It worked! Rescue ships rushed to the scene and all aboard were saved except for four souls lost in the collision. REPUBLIC sank off Martha's Vineyard and was the largest liner yet to be lost at sea.
The wreck was rediscovered in 1981. Among the artifacts brought up was this carafe. Similar carafes are shown in the attached photos of White Star ships of the era.
It comes from a collector who bought it years ago off eBay so there is no provenance.
Good condition for broken wreck glassware.
