One of the last occasions the world's mightiest Super Liners were berthed together.
This is Hudson Piers off Lower Manhattan in March, 1962. At top is the
SS United States
, center the
SS France
and the aging 3-funneled
SS Queen Mary
is at bottom.
A true 'Ocean Greyhound', the
United States
was by far the fastest liner ever built: with 4 sets of Westinghouse Turbines mashing out a shaft horsepower of 241,785
(this information was finally declassified in 1968
) the
United States
was the last liner to ever hold the Transatlantic Speed Record
smashing the
Queen Mary's
best time by over 10 hours on her maiden voyage in July, 1952, despite having to cut through a 60 mph gale blowing off Bishop Rock.
She recovered the Riband for America after a 100 year wait, since the
Arctic
last held it a century earlier.
But like the vanishing frontier of The Great Plains during the mid-1800's, this photo signaled the beginning of the end of dominance for the passenger ship industry as within a few short years the magnificent Trans-Atlantic Culture during
The
Era Of The Great Super Liners
faded into history.
