    Description

A FR. 1238 Third Issue - Five Cents (5c) fractional.   Third Issue notes were issued from December 5, 1864 to August 16, 1869.  This is the variety with a green back.  Pictured is Spencer M. Clark (1811-1890), Chief Clerk at the National Currency Bureau.  He placed his own portrait on this note which caused Congress to pass a law forbidding portrayal of any living person on any U.S. notes.
This mid-grade Very Fine note has a tiny pinhole and a rounded corner.  There are no tears.
Any other auctions paid for at the same time will ship free with this note.  Please wait for an invoice to receive the combined shipping rate.
