The Pompeian Company grew out of an early Drug Store where the owner started making products for Barber Shops and slowly added products for Dandruff and later added a line for women. An early successful product was a rouge called Pompeian Bloom. The women products took off and the company started concentrating on the items for women. An early employee of the drug store was Otto F. Leopold and he helped build the Pompeian Company. He was the early salesman and later when the owner of the drug store died, he took over the company as President and built it into a very respected company in Cleveland, Ohio. This little company was aggressive in their advertising adventures. In fact, Actress Mary Pickford, who in the first quarter of this century became "America's Sweetheart" and moviedom's most valuable asset, was a early model for the Pompeian Company. In 1918, she was chosen to be featured in advertising prints (such as the one we are offering) promoting the sale of products made by Pompeian Manufacturing Co., who at the time was a local cosmetics firm located in Cleveland Ohio. In time this company had an European office in Liverpool, England and in Canada. In the heyday, this local cosmetic company employed over 100 people. But then, in 1927, the company was sold to Colgate Palmolive Peet for million. This was an almost unheard of price at the time and Otto and his family lived comfortable in a small mansion until their death. Afterward, the Pompeian name and product lines continued on the market for six months and then disappeared forever. This is a lovely Advertising Print of that Pompeian Company (Later called Colgate - Palmolive) from 1925 - two years before they sold out.
